Day 15 – A lake, an Abbey Church and another lake

Looking across Wagital Lake
It was another cold day in Zürich.  Mary took us up to a hydro lake, Wagital, in the Alps.  It was a spectacular drive up on narrow roads.  We went for a lovely walk around part of the lake.  Mary said that the last time she had been there were snow drifts metres high.

On the way back, we almost got taken out by a very large truck going fast up the hill. Slight contact was made with our side mirror but the truck, in its last -minute attempt to avoid us, scraped against the rocks on the other side of the road.  After experiencing patient and careful driving from most drivers, that event

was very scary.

After lunch we all went to a village called Einsiedeln.  The major feature of the town is an amazing Abbey Church that is as large as any other major cathedral that I have visited.  It has its origins back with a hermit monk in around 984AD and has been burnt and rebuilt several times with  major extensions from around the 1500s.  The paintings on the roof of the church are amazing and I have not seen anything like it before.  Perhaps in the Vatican they are as stunning as these ones.  Unfortunately, I couldn’t take any pictures of the inside as that was not permitted.  Like all the cathedrals or even small churches I have visited, it was bitterly cold inside.

Einsiedeln is small town that is a hub for skiing in the area and next to a lake that is surrounded by the mountains.  It was yet another photo opportunity before we went back to Lachan for dinner.
